The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth is the debut album by British folk metal band Skyclad, and is regarded as one of the first folk metal albums, with the track "The Widdershins Jig" in particular pointing the way for the genre. Front cover artwork is by Garry Sharpe-Young.
The opening "The Sky Beneath My Feet" starts with a chromatic guitar riff and keyboards for about a minute, which then get joined by a fiddle, and the rest of the song is thrash metal. "Trance Dance (A Dreamtime Walkabout)" is also mostly thrash, whereas "A Minute's Piece" is an instrumental with a fuzzed out bass. The "Widdershins Jig", however, has a heavy metal guitar cutting heads with a violin and a piccolo joining in.
"Pagan Man", on the other hand, is a brief spoken piece, while "Skyclad" has a fade-in with keyboards and a brief fiddle shows up again at the end. "Moongleam and Meadowsweet" is a ballad where Martin Walkyier actually sings for a while (for the most part he performs with shouting growls on this release), then the album wraps up with eerie chants in "Terminus", which turns into thrash metal with a few start/stop riffs at the end.
