Metalcore
Welcome to Metal Wiki, the ultimate metal database
Metalcore is a rock genre that in its basic form is a fusion of hardcore punk and extreme metal. The name is a portmanteau of heavy metal and hardcore punk. The term took on its current meaning in the mid-1990s, describing bands like Earth Crisis, Merauder, Deadguy and Integrity. Metalcore is distinguished from other punk metal fusions by its emphasis on breakdowns: slower, intense passages conducive to moshing.
Metalcore is criticized by many people, metalheads in particular, for... well, no discernible reason, actually. It is commonly grouped with nu metal as a hated genre of metal music. Both genres are often referred to as 'poser metal' and 'mallcore'. Critics of metalcore will also often argue that it is not a genre of metal, rather a genre of hardcore punk with metal influences; these critics defend their arguments by citing that the word 'metalcore' ends with 'core' rather than 'metal' (these are the same critics who claim that nu metal isn't metal even though it ends with 'metal'). However, metalcore can equally qualify as both.
Examples of metalcore bands include Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Atreyu, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Avenged Sevenfold, Hatebreed and Bullet for My Valentine.
